Svartåmynningen is one of the finest localities for birds in Östergötland. This is where a large number of migrating birds rest during the spring and autumn. Furthermore, the extensive water meadows are home to many nesting birds.
The estuary of the River Svartån is one of the finest areas for birds in Östergötland. Over 200 species of birds have been noted in the extensive water meadows and reed beds that skirt a headland made up of sand.
When the ice melts during March - April, birds such as Goosander, Smew, Goldeneye and Tufted Duck congregate in large flocks on the open water. During April - May spring floods cover the water meadows where resting flocks of ducks, waders and hunting raptors feed on their way north. During October - November Goosanders return to Lake Roxen in large numbers on their way south. It is quite a spectacle to see how they fish, often forming rows to drive the fish into an inlet.
In order not to disturb nesting birds, from 1 April - 30 June, you must keep to the specially marked visitors' area and to the footpath. The reserve extends to 322 hectares and is privately owned. More information is to be found in a leaflet about Svartåmynningen Nature Reserve.
